Core Beliefs

Learn more about our core beliefs and values at Cornerstone.

Preamble

Throughout the history of the church, God has brought together people from every race, culture, and socioeconomic background to unite under one common mission. Undoubtedly, the church at Philippi is one of our best documented examples of this harmony. In this single congregation, we find an esteemed businesswoman, a feared Roman prison warden, and a formerly possessed slave girl amongst the concerted group of disciples. As Paul and Timothy report to the church believers in the book of Philippians, they are prompt and purposeful to note the joy found in their partnership.

We hold this same partnership paramount in our values at Cornerstone. Our congregants come from all over the world and every walk of life. While one member may differ from another in a nuanced understanding of scripture, we understand some core doctrines to be our unifying thread as we partner together.

The following statement of our Core Beliefs is the common connection that all members at Cornerstone recognize to be accurately rooted in biblical truth. With these beliefs as our foundation, we partner together, despite our differences, to reach this world for Jesus Christ by making disciples who make disciples.

Core Beliefs

Bible

We believe the Holy Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God.

God

We believe there is one God who eternally exists in three persons: the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and that these three having the same nature, attributes, and perfections are worthy of all worship, confidence, and obedience.

Jesus

We believe in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus for the sins of all people through the shedding of his blood and death on the cross, in his bodily resurrection, in his ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in his personal return in power and glory.

Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit was sent to abide in and unify all believers at Pentecost into one body, the church, whose indwelling is the source and power of all acceptable worship and service. He is our steadfast comforter and helper and is ever present to testify of Christ.

Humanity

We believe all humanity was created in the image of God, but through the sin of Adam and Eve, all have fallen and inherited a sinful nature. Thus, mankind in their natural state are lost, alienated from God, and incapable of attaining salvation by any personal effort or merit.

Salvation

We believe salvation is a free gift of God offered to all humanity by grace and received through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The evidence of this faith is expressed by the believer’s obedience to God. We believe that all true believers, having been justified, shall be kept saved forever.

Resurrection

We believe in the physical resurrection of both the saved and the lost: those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, and those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

Church

We believe the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The church is composed of all believers who are united into a spiritual family by the Holy Spirit and are responsible in their local church settings to love and serve others with a pure heart.

Mission

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ commissioned his people to go and make disciples for his Kingdom. We understand discipleship, as modeled by Christ, to be the ongoing process of a believer investing his or her life into the life of another for the purpose of spiritual formation and maturity. Subsequently, it is the mission of the church to reach the world for Jesus Christ by making disciples who make disciples.
